My interest in and involvement with purebred dogs began in the seventies, when I obtained a Beagle, called Flemando Bojangles, from Bob Fleming. I had followed Bob’s big winner, Flemando Hightime’s, show career for some time, and my boy was a repeat mating of him. My puppy wasn’t a huge winner, but good enough to be titled by a rookie in those very competitive times, and it was a good apprenticeship. I was fortunate to get help from Lesley Hiltz of Torbay Beagles, and a few years later I was entrusted with a Manabay bitch from her partnership with Liz Rosbach, and that was my lucky break.
My Southound Beagles of the eighties were well regarded and respected, with consistent winners at National, Royal, All Breeds, and Specialty levels. In 1990, they became Daisyglen with my partner, Don Whitcher. We stayed a small kennel, not breeding many puppies, as we were both working, but we still had winners at all levels for many years until my gradual retirement from showing and breeding around COVID time.
I gained my hound group judging licence in 1994. This was followed by other groups, and I became an All Breeds Judge in 2014. I have enjoyed judging extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand, and in South Africa, China, Thailand, America, India and Japan, doing many specialties and semi-specialties in that time.
I always enjoyed being part of the judges' training scheme, so I was thrilled to be appointed Hound Group Leader in Victoria (and hence to the Judges Conformation Committee) in 2015. I now really enjoy this involvement and am proud of the successes we have been part of.
I have also served on the Dogs Victoria Open Show Committee for ten years and am currently its Chair.
I am on the Melbourne Royal Dog Section Committee and a keen supporter of our Royal Shows and International events. I am pleased to have been awarded Life Membership of the Beagle Club of Victoria, Ladies Kennel Club and Caulfield and District Kennel Club.
